File Versioning
Cognio DesignOps records which version of the software saved each design file. When you open a file saved by an earlier version, Cognio DesignOps upgrades it to the current format automatically, so designs carry forward from release to release without any conversion on your part.
Which Files Are Versioned
The following files record the version they were saved with:
- Sites (
.cogsite), including every Space and Control Panel Group inside them - Spaces (
.cogspace) - Control Panel Groups (
.cogcpg) - Module configurations (
.cogmod) - Control themes (
.cogtheme)
See File Extensions for the full list of Cognio file types.
Opening Files from an Earlier Version
When you open or import a file saved by an earlier version, Cognio upgrades it one release at a time until it reaches the current version. For example, a file from 1.0.1 opened in 1.3 is upgraded from 1.0.1 to 1.1, then 1.1 to 1.2, and then 1.2 to 1.3.
- The upgrade happens as the file opens. You do not need to do anything.
- The file on disk is not changed until you save. When you save, the file is written in the current format.
- The upgrade is designed so that as much as possible, the design looks and behaves the same as before. Where a release adds new options, they start in a default state.
Note
File versioning was added in DesignOps 1.1. Files saved before versioning was added have no version recorded, and are treated as coming from 1.0.1.
Opening Files from a Newer Version
A file saved by a newer version of Cognio DesignOps cannot be opened. Cognio shows a message giving the file's version and the newest version it supports. To open the file, update Cognio DesignOps to that version or later.
Files cannot be converted back to an earlier version. If you need to keep working in an earlier version, keep a copy of your files from before you opened them in the newer version.
Syncing with Hardware
To sync, a Smart Device must be running the same firmware version as Cognio DesignOps, including the patch number (for example, 1.1.0 with 1.1.0). If the versions do not match, the sync stops before anything is sent, with a message giving both versions. Update the device's firmware to match, then sync again. See Troubleshooting.
Changes by Version
Each release that changes the file format has a page describing what changes when an earlier file is upgraded:
