AES67 and Cognio

The AES67 standard provides interoperability between different forms of AoIP (Audio over IP). AES67 is not a networking solution in and of itself, but rather a group of interoperability specifications for connecting media streams.

AES67 is supported by various IP-based audio networking systems such as Dante, Ravenna, Livewire, and Q-LAN. Because Dante supports AES67, Cognio Dante-enabled hardware can receive and transmit audio with other IP-based audio networking systems — Q-LAN, for example.

Key points

When using Cognio Dante-enabled hardware with AES67, keep these points in mind:

  • Cognio Dante-enabled hardware is compatible with AES67, but is not AES67-specific hardware.
  • Audinate's Ultimo chipset does not support AES67.
  • AES67 stream assignments are handled by the receiving device.
  • AES67 streams only appear as a transmitter in Dante Controller.
  • AES67 transmit streams from Cognio Dante-enabled hardware are not assignable in Dante Controller.
  • AES67 is capable of both unicast and multicast communication; however, Dante currently only supports multicast.
  • When two Dante-enabled devices are passing audio between each other, they always use Dante for the communication, regardless of AES67 streams.

Dante interoperability details

Dante supports multicast audio interoperability between Dante devices and non-Dante AES67 RTP audio devices. Not all Dante devices support AES67 — check with your device manufacturer.

  • AES67 is supported in both DDM (Dante Domain Manager) and non-DDM networks. When enrolled in a domain, AES67 is supported on Dante devices running Dante firmware v4.2.x and above for the Brooklyn, Broadway, and HC chipsets. Devices that do not meet those specifications (for example, the UltimoX chipset) can be enrolled in a domain in AES67 mode but cannot send or receive AES67 RTP flows.
  • Audio transport between Dante-enabled devices is always handled by the Dante Audio Transport Protocol, even when the devices have AES67 enabled.
  • Non-Dante AES67 devices are not enrolled in domains.
  • Only one domain in AES67 mode can be created in DDM, because AES67 uses a fixed PTP v2 domain number (0).
