CONFIGURING PC NIC FOR CONNECTIVITY

As with any network device, Cognio units will automatically search for a DHCP server when connected to any network. If no DHCP server is found, it will default to a standard APIPA scheme of 169.254.x.y. A Windows PC can be connected directly to a Cognio control-side device and be communicated with in Cognio Builder. The network interface card (NIC) should be set to either DHCP mode or be staticly set to the same range and scheme as the device to be communicated with.

To configure a Windows PC NIC for either DHCP or static IP addressing, click on the Start menu and search for "ncpa.cpl" or otherwise navigate to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections.

Right click on the primary NIC for the Control side and select Preoperties.

Double-click the "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" option or select it and choose Properties.

If "Obtain and IP address automatically" is selected, the PC will remain in DHCP mode, resolving to a 169.254.x.y address until a DHCP server is present. If "Use the following IP address" is selected there is the option to enter a static IP address - this is where you may set your PC NIC to the same subnet/scheme as the Cognio control-side devices in question.

Note; Cognio Builder does not communicate directly to Dante Managed Devices, but instead does this through a managing device (DSP).

FIREWALLS, ANTI-VIRUS, AND OTHER NETWORK MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

While the Control and Dante networks can exist on the same network with each other, Symetrix recommends keeping these networks separate to avoid potential network issues. These networks can be separated simply by isolated physical switches or differentated VLANs/Subnets on the same network switch.
